Crafts with 1 year old!

Okay--so as cute as I think babies are I LOVE that D has turned 1! I'm just so excited that his vocabulary will start growing, and he's exploring and learning new things all the time. I'm most excited that I've discovered some crafts to do with him! I'm a neat-freak but when it comes to D there are no restrictions on messes.

So, I was looking up things to do with him and I went to Walmart and searched the aisles. I picked him up Crayola Jumbo Crayons, a coloring book, and some finger paint. I second guessed myself thinking that he was still too little for these things, but decided to give it a shot. I started with the coloring.

I used painters tape to tape the page down so he didn't rip it, etc. He wasn't sure what to do, so I sat down next to him with a picture of my own to demonstrate. He started to see what I was doing and gave it a whirl (okay, so he mostly just banged the crayons onto the paper, haha, but it worked)

We do this at least three times a week now! Even if we only get 5 minutes out of him, that's fine by me! I don't want him to feel like I'm forcing him to color if he isn't interested, and because he's still so little he really just wants to bang the crayons together.

I went to a craft store to get some stuff for D's birthday party a few weeks ago, and the store was having a 50% off crayola sale, which was perfect since I had been on the hunt for an art smock for my boy. I ended up finding one and it was onsale--score! :) I then thought about a roll of paper, and when I saw the price was only $5.99 for 75 feet of paper, I was sold! I bought that and I'm pretty sure that this will last me a year!

So then I went home and decided after his afternoon snack, we were going to attempt to finger paint.

The trick to this! Listen carefully!

Okay, end the dramatics, but seriously, this is my trick for letting D finger paint. Have everything ready you're going to need from start to finish, including clean up efforts!

We do this twice a week after his afternoon snack, so while he's eating I get everything ready. Steps:

  1. I cut at least 2 pieces of paper for him to paint on. I tape one down on his crafting table.
  2. I also get the pieces of tape I'm going to need for the next sheet so I'm not messing around with that as a 1 year old is covered in paint (!)
  3. I get a wash cloth and put water on it for clean up, or use face/hand wipes if I have them.
  4. I put water in my sink so I can stick his smock in it while I hang up his paintings, etc.
  5. I have a clothes line in my laundry room to hang the pictures to dry, so I always make sure I have extra clothes pins out there just in case!
  6. Then I put D's smock on and let him have fun!

The FIRST thing he did was put his hand in the paint, and then try and eat it (it's non toxic, luckily, and it also tastes horrible!)

He got the hang of it in no time!

He was mid-laugh in this one!

Clean up takes me usually no more than 5 minutes, and that includes him, the table, hanging up pictures, etc! I try and make sure it's as effortless as possible. If it seems overwhelming, just start slow. I promise, it will be okay! Take deep breaths and tell yourself they're only little once, so enjoy it while you can! :)

More to come sooner or later! Hope you enjoyed the little update and advice for crafting with a 1 year old!
