Homeschool!

Hey ya'll! Sorry it's been so long! I'm trying to make a point to blog at least once a week now that I have a reliable laptop!

When I was pregnant with D, or Sport, as he's often called (first born) I had said I wanted to homeschool him for various reasons. I think people thought I was kidding, because as he got older they tried bullying me into sending him to school because of all the typical reasons you hear, socializing, structure.....and so on. I almost caved. I really did. I was afraid I was being a bad parent for not sending him to school, so I was ready to not homeschool altogether. And then one day I decided every parent is different. We all love our children and want to do what's best for them. Some people send their children to public school and that's okay! Some choose private schools, and that's okay too! Some home school, unschool, among other things and that's okay too! The fact is, one size does not fit all. Do not feel bad for unschooling, homeschool, private schooling, public schooling or other. We do the best we can!

That being said, we are 99.99%  positive we will be homeschooling both Sport and Squirt! We will try it out and see how it goes. The why's would be another blog post entirely, and I would happy to write it if anyone was interested.

ANYWAY, Sport turned four years old three weeks ago. He'd be able to attend preschool in the fall. I've always done "school" with him but it's been very flexible. Since he turned four and we decided to homeschool, things have gotten more serious. We are going to be doing at least four days of school a week until at least the end of June. Last weeks theme was, appropriately, sports.

We do math, English (mainly pre writing and tracing) art, gym, science and we work on fine motor skills (Sport is slightly  fine-motor delayed and this helps!) This week our science was rolled into one day when we took him to Wonderworks! It was amazing, though it scared him at times.

English

We do a lot of prewriting, tracing and practicing. I put no pressure on him as he puts enough on himself. He may be his father's son, but he inherited my stubbornness and my perfectionism.

The letter of the week "S" for sports.

This worksheet came from a workbook we got at Target on clearance at back to school time. It's a Leapfrog book!

This page came from a workbook that we got from Barnes and Noble (I believe I've seen them at Target as well!) and its just a tracing book for ages 2, 3, 4. This page was placed in a binder with a sheet protector so we can practice it again and again!

This is Sport working on his workbook we got from Target. Its a Scholastic wipe-clean workbook. We love dry erase because he doesn't get as frustrated when he makes an error, as if he does when he does a mistake in pencil.

This is a dot marker worksheet that I made.  This could be English or fine motor skills!

Math
The number of the week was 4. Sport knows and recognizes all of his numbers 0 - 10, and he knows 100 (its his favorite number)

Sport loves dot markers. I just let him use that sometimes in place of coloring! These worksheets came from HERE

Sport was so good at doing this worksheet. He really despises coloring, and normally I don't force him to do it, but he did this willingly! And the 4 under "draw it" he did all by himself , without any help.
This worksheet came from HERE

This is an I Spy that I got from HERE. This site has a bunch of awesome free printables for I Spy! Sport did awesome practicing his numbers and counting!
ART:
For art we did golf ball paintings! A couple of weeks ago I was in Target in the sporting goods section, and they had golf balls that were decorated like other sports balls! I bought them knowing I could use these for golf ball painting.

For this activity we talked about mixing colors, and patterns as well. These are currently hanging on my living room wall!

We did a Q-Tip painting of a basketball and a football. I made these easily as well just using Clipart!

Gym:

For this we played bowling inside. We have a bowling set that the boys love to play with, so when I told Sport this was for school he was so excited!

We also played soccer indoor!

When we went to Wonderworks they had a lot of sports games and experiments! We played basketball, soccer, air hockey. They had a giant projection screen that you could throw baseballs, darts, break plates, etc on! Needlss to say as long as he was playing a sport he was great!

Science
For this I just used our Wonderworks trip  to add in the science. Especially using their sports equipment and area!

Fine motor skills:

This is actually from a cutting workbook that I bought at Barnes and Noble! Sport is working really hard on his scissor skills right now, he still has some issues with them.

Sport loves Mazes! We are working on his pencil skills because sometimes he presses too light but he's very good at these! This one came from HERE

This was a maze from one of his maze workbooks that I got from Barnes and Noble! Use his activity binder inside a sheet protector so that we can do this time and time again!

We had so much fun with school this week, and I could not be more prod of Sport for making it through and not complaining much! He seemed to really find this theme enjoyable!

I have other blogs I'm considering writing, but for now, one a week with the weekly theme seems sufficient. We are doing Easter week this week since Easter is on Sunday! I hope you enjoyed our homeschool update! Until next time, Friends!! <3
